7 Essential Clothing Items I Always Pack for Every Trip

Although the precise contents of my suitcase might vary from one trip to the next, there are seven pieces of clothing that I consider necessities when traveling. Whether London, Reykjavik, or New York, it doesn’t matter where I’m going; these items are coming with me.

Patagonia Rain Jacket

I have owned my Patagonia raincoat for over seven years, and it is still going strong and keeping me dry. It is lightweight, breathable, and packable (it rolls up beautifully and takes up minimal suitcase space). Unfortunately, the style I own, Women’s Stretch Rainshadow Jacket, is no longer made, but you can buy a lightly worn version through Patagonia’s Worn Wear website. Alternatively, their Storm Racer Jacket looks similar to the Rainshadow style.

American Giant Solid Color Tee

I am a big proponent of capsule wardrobes, especially when it pertains to travel, and American Giant’s solid color tops are versatile at their core. Dress them up, dress them down, wear them layered under a sweatshirt, or wear them by themselves – the possibilities are endless. Plus, all of American Giant’s clothes are manufactured here in America and made to last.

Aviator Jeans

Also made in America are Aviator Jeans. In addition to their high-quality construction and timeless styles, these jeans are laudable for their comfort and pockets. Unlike the majority of women’s jeans, these jeans feature deep front pockets, perfect for stashing your wallet or phone.

Black Dress

My go-to black dress for travel

You never know when you might need a black dress. You score a last-minute reservation at a fancy restaurant – black dress to the rescue. You decide to grab drinks at a trendy bar – black dress saves the day. Or you simply want to look pretty for that day’s photos – black dress for the win. I won’t bother linking a particular black dress, for the brand itself doesn’t matter. Find a style – maxi, mini, t-shirt, strapless, or whatever – that works for you.

Allbirds Flats

The author of this post, Julia, lounges on a sofa while reading. She is wearing a white sweater, black pants, and a pair of black flats.

Allbirds flats: not only good for travel but also at-home photo shoots

I will, however, recommend a specific shoe to pair with your black dress: Allbirds’s Tree Breezers in jet black. These flats take up minimal room in your suitcase and can easily be paired with other outfits to dress up a look. Plus, they are washable, so if you step in a puddle or spill a drink on them, they can be tossed in the washer once you get home.

Pacas Socks

You can’t see them, but I’m wearing Pacas socks.

While we’re on the subject of feet, let’s talk about socks. Although often overlooked or relegated to our afterthoughts, socks are an essential piece of clothing, especially if you are packing for a walking-heavy trip. They reduce friction between your shoe and foot, help to control moisture levels within your shoe, provide padding for your foot, and perhaps most importantly, reduce the likelihood that you’ll end up with stinky feet at the end of the day (nobody wants that). My current favorite sock brand is Pacas. They use a blend of alpaca fibers and other materials to make their socks, and the resulting product is both comfortable and breathable.

Patagonia Zip Hoody

And last but not least is Patagonia’s Ahnya Full-Zip Fleece Hoody. This lightweight sweatshirt is perfect for chilly plane cabins or brisk mornings. It can also be layered with a jacket for hiking.

I hope this list comes in handy when packing for your next trip, and as always, happy travels!

-Julia
