So, you’ve finished Pride and Prejudice and are now wondering what to read next? We’ve all been there (well, at least I have). Fear not, for I have put together a list of several books that should scratch that Darcy itch.
North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
North and South features an enemies-to-lovers romance set against the backdrop of industrial England. After her father suffers from a crisis of faith and resigns from his position as a clergyman in the English countryside, Margaret Hale is forced to move to the northern mill town of Milton with her family. There, she meets John Thornton, one of the local mill owners, and from their first meeting, she is determined not to like him. His abrupt, no-nonsense manner is at odds with her more genteel nature, but as she comes to know him, he begins to seem less off-putting and (much to her chagrin) more attractive.
Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson
A regency romance replete with grand estates, elegant balls, highwaymen, and sword fights – yes, please!
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
If you haven’t already read this classic, what are you waiting for? In this gothic novel, Jane Eyre accepts a governess position at Thornfield Hall, where she is to tutor the ward of Edward Rochester. In spite of his brooding nature and not-quite-so-handsome appearance, Jane soon finds herself falling in love with him, but he has more beautiful and far wealthier suitors…And he’s also hiding a terrible secret.
Longbourn by Jo Baker
Have you ever wondered what life was like for the Bennet family’s servants? What were they doing while Elizabeth and her sisters were off attending balls? If you have, you’re in luck, because that is the premise of Longbourn.
Jane Austen’s Other Novels
And last but not least, you should check out Jane Austen’s other novels. Besides Pride and Prejudice, she wrote six complete novels: Persuasion, Mansfield Park, Northanger Abbey, Lady Susan, Sense and Sensibility, and Emma. I recommend Persuasion – it’s my second favorite Austen novel.
Are there any other books you would add to this list? Let me know in the comments below!
